Canberra Times Fun Run 10.2km

Weather: Absolutely perfect. Cold, blue skies, zero wind. The course: Not exactly the same course that had been used for the last few decades due to adding in the 14km race. It is now 200m longer, another hill loop has been added with 1.3km to go and they added a stretch of grass and another annoying hill 200m from the finish instead of bike path, doesn't hug the lake curve, inland by 20-60m, held wide down Kings Avenue to avoid slower 14km runners. The winning time for the 10km and the first 3 places (including 1st) would be the slowest on record and they are all good runners and in form. Oh and the 14km runners are calling their race short.

Race History: Deek holds the race record on the old course (pre-2013?) of 29:01 in 1990. Andrew Lloyd (my former landlord) ran 29:02. In similar conditions to this morning Brett Cartwright ran 29:21 in 2007 (when I wasn't even fit and ran 34:21). I can't verify the start and finish but the 1982 image up Adelaide Ave is true. Of the girls race history: Lisa Ondieki ran 32:21. Sue Hobson ran 33:30s. I know Joy Terry ran 33 flat c1990, Emily Brichachek ran 33:25 (with me) in 2011, same year Marty Dent 29:11.

Steve: 36:18 4th M40-49. A great run. Steve splits: 3:23,3:26,3:34,3:49,3:46 [18:03],3:37,3:35,3:39,3:36,3:35[18:15]. Even with the extra distance an all-time race PB by 35 seconds. Got to be happy with that!!

Keith: 37:21 3rd M50-59 (Keith is M55+) Completely spent at the end and a brilliant run. Keith splits: 3:46,3:38,3:42,3:48,3:54,3:39,3:42,3:42,3:42,3:43. 3-5km up and hills in the 7th and 9th. Keith had the same race plan as me and executed it to perfection. Race PB also by a fair margin.

Jane: 37:48 7th female, 3rd W40-49. The female field today was much stronger than the male. This is the Jane I remember when I moved to Canberra who could push me over 5km. Absolutely flying like Steve and Keith now with no limits in sight. Her splits were impressive.

Helen: 44:56 1st W50-59 Had back and glute issues all week. Three days off didn't affect her performance. Had a strong last 5km.

Maria 45:02 2nd W50-59 A very fast first km, Maria had better splits than Helen first 5km, Helen claimed all the last 5km splits.

Kathy 45:45 1st W60-69 Incredible from Kathy. I've seen her in training and racing lately, no signs of slowing down. She was very happy.

Roger: 47:00 Starting to run well again after some leg issues

Gabe: 47:31 A massive PB by over 2 minutes and an easy qualifier for the City2Surf red group.

Tori high 40s, sometimes runs under a different name, didn't see her result but was happy.

In the 5km both SK and GT won their age groups. In the 14km at 8am KT ran 1/3 distance, had an issue, went home, had a shower and made it back for the 10km start at 8:30 running 42 minutes+, very impressive. Sue also did 5km.

Of me: I had a great run. I started slowly by comparison, through 3km 9:50 before the first climb. I was just under maximum threshold as I'd planned and in 11th place. I started to reel in the fast starters on the succession of hills and had collected four runners who I was dragging around the course. I never felt tired and continued to work on the front all the way home. With 2km to go I only had one on my heels. With 500m to go he finally did a turn at the front (in other words try to outkick me). We raced to line line crossing together 34:12 =7th 1st M50. Given the extra distance and hill that would be as quick as the 33:27 I ran in 2012.

This last week wasn't a usual taper week. Conscious of the hills, my tempo run up Black Mountain on Tuesday gave me a boost. I was incredibly happy how I ran them today. I only ran 8km on Thursday. The 2km tempo at Stromlo 6:34 was great again. I felt so good on Friday and Saturday I did two runs of 90 minutes...not the taper I had planned but I didn't need to and certainly didn't affect me today.

We all did coffee/brunch after. I am very proud of all of them.

For the record:

We may live a couple of thousand K's apart but I'm happy to call our virtual race a draw today. Congrats on your performance its good when we can be happy about a performance.
You are clearly running better than me David and I am happy for it. Yes I am happy to be running strong and having someone to chase. Long may us both be relatively injury free. Hope we meet again to race when we are both still on top of our games.
