Australian Masters Athletics Championships 5000m M55 1st 16:59
5000m day for the distance runners. Day started warm with some wind, ended up hot and windy. There were some great times done on the day although some amount of suffering was required.
My race was the second last, running against M55-69. I chased a time of sub-16:30 but never got near it, running slower than my 5km split in the 10000m a couple of days ago. I had good running form throughout, pulled up well, lapped the field. Not my best run of the championships so far. I did enjoy the day cheering on and watching.
Kathy won W65 in just over 23 minutes, the first race of the day ages 55plus. Louisa Abram won easily outright in 18 minutes, age grade of 94%. Also lapped entire field.
Tomorrow is cross country 8000m. It will be hot and windy again. Course is not the same as in World Masters Athletics Championships 2016, but in the same start location. Comprises 4 x 2000m loops. There is plenty of scope to see competitors. There is one rise each lap. Competition here is strong through all the ages male and female. It will be a great morning of racing.
