Training Periodisation 2021-2022
I've been using training periodisation since 2008/9 when I resumed running competition as a Masters Athlete. Originally the plan was a 12 month cycle to peak at Australian Masters Athletics Championships, usually held in April. In 2015-2018 I adapted the plan as a double peak with Australian Masters Athletics Championships and World Masters Athletics Championships, usually held August to November. For the first time since 2018 it looks likely there will be a World Masters Athletics Championships to be held in Tampere Finland, July 2021. Australian Masters Athletics Championships also looks possible in April 2021. I've been hoping these events would go ahead having just completed the first 6 month training block.
Question 1: Does it work? Answer: Yes. I've never been injured for a major championships. I've competed in 69 Championship events from 800m to Half Marathon. I've won 50 times, second 11, third 3, fourth 1, fifth 2, 7th 2.
Question 2: Does a double peak affect the World Championships? Answer: No, Australian Championships is a good predictor of World result. 2015 10000m (Australian 33:35, World 33:39) ; 2016 10000m (Australian 33:46, World 33:48)
Training Periods:
Preparatory Period 1 (Base Training, 120km+/week, assorted intervals and time trials, few races): April 2021-September 30 2021 (Just completed)
Direct Preparatory Period 2 (Prepare to race track, include short intervals): October 2021 (Just commenced)
Competition Period 1 (Track racing, low key): November 2021-mid December 2021
Preparatory Period 2 (Base Training): mid December 2021-mid January 2022
Direct Preparatory Period 2 (Prepare to race track): mid January 2022-February 28 2022
Competition Period 2 (Track racing): March-April 2022 (Australian Championships)
Shorter cycle
Preparatory Period 3 (Base Training): April 2022-May 31 2022
Direct Preparatory Period 3 (Prepare to race track): June 2022
Competition Period 3 (Track racing): July 2022 (World Championships)
Notes: There is a full 10 day taper prior to each Championships. At Australian Championships and World Championships I have recently run 1500m,5000m, 10000m and 8000m XC, often on consecutive days. In 2015,2016 no 1500m. In 2016 a Half Marathon as last event.
